Playing at home, hosts Vietnam took the initiative from the start of the game. Bao Long surprisingly opened the scoring with a shot from outside the penalty area in the eighth minute. The U20 Bhutan goalkeeper seemed to be obstructed in his view, making it difficult for him to save.
The early goal motivated the hosts to play more comfortably, but coach Hua Hien Vinh’s players struggled to impose their style of play.
Visitors Bhutan were not completely outmatched in the first half. They created a good opportunity to earn an equalizer in the 28th minute, but unfortunately, Namgyel shot wide.
Right after the break, coach Hien Vinh sent in Cong Phuong who struck a brace and assisted two other teammates in scoring two more goals.
“This was a lucky match for me. I’m very happy to contribute two goals and two assists for the team. Those were plays that suit my strengths, reflecting my abilities and allowing me to show everyone what I can do,” Cong Phuong said in a post-match interview.
The 5-0 victory helped Vietnam rise to the top of Group A, ahead of Syria that also secured three points but on goal difference. Vietnam will play Guam at Lach Tray Stadium in another Group A match on September 25.
