The capital’s largest fish market Yen So was bustling on January 21 amid local people being busy preparing for Ong Cong – Ong Tao (the Land Genie and the Kitchen Gods Day), which falls on 23rd of the last lunar month, or January 22 this year.
The fish market located in Yen So ward of Hoang Mai district is the largest wholesale market in Hanoi. Each day sees the market provide dozens of tonnes of fish to meet demand in the capital.
The market sparks into life from 3 a.m. as cars carrying golden carp from surrounding localities flock to the area.
As the Kitchen Gods Day approaches, traders must import more golden carps to satisfy the increasing demand of city dwellers.
Every day dozens of tonnes of fish are delivered throughout the capital and to several neighbouring areas from this market.
The wholesale price of carp at the market hovers at around VND130,000 to VND140,000 per kilogramme.
A trader says she brings in two tonnes of carp to prepare for the Kitchen Gods Day.
Retailers carefully select top quality carp to put on sale.
Buckets of red carp are meticulously inspected by buyers who are seeking the healthiest fish.
The market thrives with busy trade running from early in the morning to the end of the day.
Fish sold at the market comes from the northern provinces of Hung Yen, Hai Duong, and Ha Nam.
