Powerlifter Le Van Cong brings home bronze from Paris Paralympics 2024

Powerlifter Le Van Cong, a hopeful of Vietnamese Paralympic delegation, took a bronze medal in the men’s up to 49kg category at the Paris Paralympics 2024 in France on September 4.

Cong’s biggest opponent in this category was Omar Qarada of Jordan. In the first attempt, Qarada succeeded with a weight of 175kg, while Cong could only lift 171kg.

Later, Cong registered a weight of 176kg for his second attempt but he failed. Meanwhile, his opponent Qarada successfully lifted 177kg, bringing to bear more pressure on the Vietnamese powerlifter.

In the third attempt, Cong decided to register a weight of 181kg. Despite his best efforts, the 1984-born powerlifter was unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, Qarada successfully lifted 181kg. After that, the Jordanian athlete registered a weight of 185kg in an attempt to break Cong’s 183kg world record, but he failed.

Besides Qarada, Turkish lifter Abdullah Kayapinar also performed well. He successfully lifted 172kg, 176kg, and 180kg in three attempts, earning the silver medal.

By securing a bronze medal, Cong brought home the first medal for Vietnam at the Paris Paralympics 2024.

In 2017, Cong set the 2017 Elite World Record in the same category in Mexico with 183.5kg, and the 2016 Paralympic Record in Brazil with 183kg.
