QUẢNG NAM — The central province plans to allocate more than VNĐ1.3 trillion (US$52 million) for upgrading high schools in 2025-30, as only ten out of 54 schools (18.5 per cent) attained the national school standard.
Vice chairman of the provincial people’s committee, Trần Anh Tuấn said the fund will be used to provide school equipment and facilities and for repairs to infrastructure.
He said many schools in mountainous and rural area need restoration and restructuring in dealing with climate change and risk of disaster.
According to a report from the provincial department of education and training, 406 schools (about 56 per cent) across all levels passed the national standards.
It said almost schools are limited in terms of regular funds for upgrading facilities and equipment, five years after qualifying standard recognition and schools failed qualification every five-year assessment given by the ministry of education and training.
The department also warned that 406 ethnic students, of which 241 were high schools, in some mountainous districts have dropped out of school in 2023-24.
Vice chairman of Tây Giang district’s people’s committee, ARất Blúi said the district provided a monthly financial assistance of VNĐ360,000 ($14.4) per Cơ Tu ethnic student to continue studying at schools.
He said some villages in rural mountainous area were out of poverty standards and these students at the villages did not get subsidised allowances for school fees, meals and other spending.
He explained some families still found paying fees difficult.
In a regular half-year meeting, Quảng Nam also called for contributions from community and businesses in rebuilding more than 10,000 poorly structured and unsafe houses across the province.
