VN triumphs in boys’ singles at SEA table tennis championship for first time
Nguyen Duy Phong brought home the first gold medal in the men’s singles at the Southeast Asian youth table tennis championship which recently wrapped up in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.
The Hai Duong native trounced Singaporean rival Nicholas Tan 4-1 in the final match of the boys U19 singles.
The win marks the first time that the Vietnamese athlete has bagged a gold medal in the boys U19 singles at the regional youth table tennis championship.
Along with Phong, his teammate Dinh Quang Minh clinched a silver medal in the U19 category.
Vietnamese table tennis team obtained a total of three gold, three silver, and four bronze medals, thereby helping them to win a ticket to compete in the Asian youth table tennis championship 2024.
The competition got underway in Malaysia from May 12 to May 16, with the tournament gathering together young players from across the Southeast Asian region.
Vietnam sent a total of 16 players to compete in the 14 to 15 and 18 to 19 categories.
