Vietnam tops Southeast Asia judo championships
The national team clinched a first-place finish in the overall medal table of the Southeast Asian Judo Championships 2024 which concluded in Bali, Indonesia, on June 2, with 20 gold, 15 silver, and 28 bronze medals.
Among the winners were Pham Quoc Quan in the men’s 55kg, Le Nguyen Hung Cuong in the men’s 60kg, Nguyen Hai Ba in the men’s under 73kg, Nguyen Thanh Phu Qui in the women’s 44kg, and Do Thu Ha in the women’s under 52kg.
Furthermore, some of the top young judokas aged 15 to 20 secured golds in both the men’s and women’s combat categories, including Huynh Tran Quyen in the men’s 55kg, Dang Thanh Duong in the men’s under 66kg, Lan Thi Ngan Ha in the women’s under 52kg, and Duong Thanh Thanh in the women’s over 78kg.
The tournament took place from May 30 to June 2 and drew the participation of more than 250 athletes from eight countries, namely Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and hosts Indonesia.
Indonesia came second after taking nine gold, 15 silver, and 26 bronze medals, while the Philippines finished third with three gold, two silver, and six bronze medals.
The Vietnamese team sent 75 judokas to the tournament. At the last two Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) recently, the Vietnamese judo team brought home seven and nine gold medals, respectively.
