Former Vietnamese footballer Le Cong Vinh has been nominated for the Icon of ASEAN Championship (ASEAN Icon) tile along with other regional stars, reported the organising board of the ASEAN Cup 2024.

According to aseanutdfc.com, the list of the nominees consists of eight stars whose contributions have lived long in the memories of the fans.

The website shared that Le Cong Vinh is among the greatest players to have ever graced the ASEAN Championship, not just because of his scoring prowess, but also for his longevity after playing in six editions between 2004 and 2016.

It added that his greatest moment came in 2008 when he helped the national team to lift their first-ever regional title.

“Cong Vinh only scored twice in the 2008 tournament, but his first was in a 2-1 win in the final first leg against favourites Thailand in Bangkok and the second a crucial 94th-minute header in Hanoi that handed the title to the Golden Star Warriors,” the website noted.

“Vietnam’s all-time leading scorer netted 15 goals in the tournament, but the one at My Dinh National Stadium in 2008 remains the most significant of his 51 international goals,” it concluded.

Other players named on the list include Kiatisuk Senamuang of Thailand, Noh Alam Shah of Singapore, Bambang Pamungkas of Indonesia, Teerasil Dangda of Thailand, Safee Sali of Malaysia, Khairul Amri of Singapore, and Chanathip Songkrasin of Thailand.
