The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding is one of the activities held during the official visit of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to Laos.
The signing ceremony took place at the National Convention Center in Vientiane, Laos, with the presence of senior leaders from both countries, underscoring their commitment to enhancing aviation service quality and expanding regional connectivity.
Under the agreement, Vietnam Airlines will support Lao Airlines by providing technical services for its Airbus A320/321 fleet at Wattay International Airport (Vientiane) and Luang Prabang, once Lao Airlines meets the required service certification standards.
The two airlines also agreed to cooperate in cargo transport at Wattay Airport once Lao Airlines completes the establishment of a cargo services company. This collaboration is expected to strengthen the aviation logistics and commercial network in the region.
Beyond service areas, the agreement offers great opportunities for training and knowledge exchange between the two national carriers. Aircraft maintenance engineers, pilots, and cabin crew from both sides will have the chance to learn and work in a professional environment, helping improve aviation workforce quality to international standards.
Notably, the agreement also sets the foundation for transitioning the cooperation into a more flexible interline partnership, expanding connections not only between Vietnam and Laos but also extending to other international markets. This strategic move is aimed at leveraging both airlines' strengths and enhancing their positions in Southeast Asia.
The cooperation between Vietnam Airlines and Lao Airlines has been established for many years, with notable achievements. Previously, the two airlines signed special interline agreements for passengers and seat exchanges, offering significant benefits to travelers on routes between Vietnam and Laos. Additionally, the two airlines have worked closely in promoting trade, tourism products, and cultural exchanges between the two countries.
Vietnam Airlines currently operates 12 flights per week connecting Vietnam and Laos. These flights not only meet travel demand but also play a crucial role as a bridge for economic trade and cultural exchange between the two nations.
The signing of the MOU marks a significant step forward in the development of the regional aviation industry, driving economic growth, trade, and tourism. Both Vietnam Airlines and Lao Airlines are optimistic that this cooperation will open up sustainable development opportunities and elevate the regional aviation sector to new heights. It also serves as a vivid demonstration of the strong friendship and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos, two close-knit neighboring countries.
