U16 national football players vie for regional title in Indonesia
The Vietnam national U16 football team are aiming to reach the semi-finals of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) U16 Youth Championship, which will get underway from June 21 to July 4 in Indonesia.
Vietnam have been drawn in Group B alongside the likes of Myanmar, Brunei, and Cambodia.
Group C sees the participation of strong rivals in the form of Thailand, Australia, Malaysia, and Timor Leste.
Meanwhile, hosts Indonesia will defend their title in Group A against Laos, the Philippines, and Singapore.
The top team of each group and one best second-place squad will advance to the last four, with the final due to take place on July 4.
In 2022, Vietnam won the runner-up title after losing to Indonesia 1-0 in the final match.
A total of 30 footballers under the guidance of head coach Tran Minh Chien gathered in Hanoi on May 23 in preparation for the AFF U16 Youth Championship.
The AFF U16 Youth Championship is an annual international football competition contested by the national teams of the members of the AFF, with the occasional invitation sent to nations from the rest of Asia.
The competition was first held back in 2002 and resumed again in 2005. Vietnam have won the championship title in 2006, 2010, and 2017.
