Talented 12 year old receives musical scholarship

HÀ NỘI — Young singer and pianist Cao Phú Quý will receive a lifetime scholarship from Germany-based Đào Minh Quang Foundation, to nurture his amazing talent.

Quý, 12, was born in Hà Nội in a family where no one has a music or arts background, however he showed his prodigious talent from an early age.

He is now an excellent seventh grader of Lý Thái Tổ secondary school and the forth-year student of the Việt Nam National Academy of Music's Piano Department. Tonight, during an awards ceremony and a live concert in Hà Nội, he will be handed the scholarship.

Quý had his first public performance singing when he was just six years old. His cute and sweet appearance, beautiful high-pitched voice and confident performance impressed the audience who loved his youthful energy on the stage.

In addition to singing different genres of music such as pop, rock, rap and beat box, Quý can also play the guitar, piano and dances.

He received many prizes from competitions, including school contests and winning an international piano contest in 2023.

This year, Quý took home a gold medal from the national Yoshine music festival and released his first music video entitled Rừng Khóc (Crying Forest), a message calling the young generation and Vietnamese youth to join hands to protect the forest.

His next video Dáng Thầy (Teacher's Shadow) will be released on November 10 to express gratitude to teachers on the occasion of Vietnamese Teachers' Day (November 21).

In his six-year long musical path, Quý participated in many major events organised by cities' People's Committees, Việt Nam Television and Central Committee's Propaganda Department.

According to the Đào Minh Quang Foundation, Quý won the scholarship for his exceptional results in school in addition to his musical skills, which needs to be strongly encouraged.

The scholarship, awarded for first time to a very young student and artist, not only to recognises his remarkable efforts, but also to help him level up his ability and discover his full potential in the future. He is expected to access to in-depth training courses, take part in music networking events with domestic and international artists and, especially, to continue to create music.

The charity Đào Minh Quang Foundation was established by Dr Đào Minh Quang in 2016 in Berlin. The foundation only carries out public and charitable activities.

In recent years, the foundation has awarded many scholarships and awards to underprivileged students with excellent academic achievements at a number of universities and high schools, or showing musical talent.

It also supports music projects and German-Vietnamese concerts, as well as cultural and musical exchange programmes between Germany and Việt Nam.

After the scholarship awarding ceremony, Quý will kick off his live concert entitled Say Hi Cao Phú Quý at the Âu Cơ Theatre.

Quý will sing traditional and new songs in four languages, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese and English. His show also includes performance with other child singers and dance troupes such as Stars of Childhood, Xusmin Dance and Vietnamese Stars.

He said, through the live concert, which is also a way to say thank you to all the teachers who helped Quý on his musical travels, he wants to encourage young people dare to think, to do and to pursue their passion. VNS
