Many people in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang’s Vinh Loc Commune flock to bathe in fields during the flood season.

Over the past two weeks, from 4 to 6 pm, hundreds of people have come to bathe in the flooded fields along Vinh Loc Canal.

Bathing in the fields is seen as one of the unique activities during the flood season in the Mekong Delta region. It often occurs from the 8th to the tenth lunar months, when the Mekong River water rises high, flooding fields west of An Giang.

Bui Thanh Phung, 48, from An Phu District, said that after leaving his workplace at around 5 pm, he takes her daughter to Vinh Loc Canal to bathe.

Some families even selected a moderately flooded area with solid ground to set up a table and chairs for a meal.

Children are interested in relaxing in flooded fields.

Nguyen Thi Ngoc Yen, 17, and her friends usually travel four kilometres to Vinh Loc Canal to bathe.

There are many stalls selling snacks and drinks around the canal.

Dao Van Phi, Chairman of Vinh Loc Commune, said people were advised to wear life jackets when swimming in the flooded fields and that children must be closely supervised by adults.

Vinh Loc Commune’s police have also deployed personnel to monitor and patrol the area, reminding residents to be cautious while swimming and warning them about deep flooding spots.
