Vietnam raked in over US$4.4 billion from seafood exports during the first half of the year, up nearly 7% year on year, with exports to the EU market soaring by 12% to hit US$513 million, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

June alone saw the country earn US$875 million from exporting the products, up 14% year on year. This also marked the month which recorded the highest export turnover since the beginning of the year.

Most notably, seafood exports to the EU market in June also enjoyed the highest growth rate of 40%.

The VASEP pointed out that seafood exports to the United States and China-Hong Kong in June also recorded high growth rates of 14% and 18%, respectively.

During the six-month period, shrimp exports brought in over US$1.6 billion, up 7% year on year, of which lobster exports skyrocketed by 57 times to more than US$130 million compared to the same period last year.

Pangasius exports also edged up by 6% to US$922 million compared to the previous year.

Although an improvement in consumption demand was recorded, export prices in markets such as China, the EU, and the UK all remained low. However, positive signs were recorded in the US market in terms of both export prices and volume.

Tuna exports also surged by nearly 25% to US$477 million, mainly due to a sharp rise in the canned-product segment.

VASEP experts predict that the country will record nearly US$10 billion in seafood turnover this year, up 12% compared to 2023.
