How to further enhance the role of the state economic sector in the socialist-oriented market economy in Vietnam was discussed at a symposium held in Hanoi on November 10, with Vietnam Airlines Corporation-Vietnam Airlines serving as a practical example.

The event is viewed as an opportunity for experts and managers to contribute ideas to help state-owned enterprises accompany the country in the era of national development.

In his speech, Vice Chairman of Commission for the Management of State Capital at Enterprises (CMSC) Nguyen Ngoc Canh emphasized that the state economy holds a key position in the nation' socio-economic development process, creating a fundamental foundation for the development of all industries, fields, economic sectors and types of enterprises in the national economy.

“For the aviation industry, this is not only a traffic artery but also plays an important role in terms of economy, security, military, and national sovereignty, therefore, maintaining the stability, safety, and efficiency of the industry plays a key role in socio-economic development.

To become a major economic, cultural, and tourism center in Asia and the world, Vietnam needs to invest heavily to form a strong aviation enterprise in order to compete in the international market,” Canh said.

Giving his opinion at the workshop, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Airlines Dang Ngoc Hoa shared, “Vietnam Airlines is well aware that wherever Vietnam Airlines aircraft fly, our “soft borders” expand. This is the important role of state-owned enterprises, as well as of the national airline.”

According to him, Vietnam Airlines has restructured and implemented a score of measures to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic, which has seriously affected the aviation industry worldwide. In 2024, Vietnam Airlines balanced its revenue and expenditure and operated profitably. However, the situation of negative equity and accumulated losses still requires stronger solutions, he emphasized.

At the workshop, experts, leaders and managers affirmed the position and role of state-owned enterprises in the socialist-oriented market economy, in which Vietnam Airlines has shown itself to be the leading flag.

Their opinions also highlighted the encouraging results that state-owned corporations and groups have achieved and frankly pointed out the difficulties and pending issues.

Simultaneously solutions and recommendations were put forward to reform state-owned enterprises in general and Vietnam Airlines in particular.

Regarding the solutions presented at the event, experts recommended that the state fast-track the completion of the legal framework, create open mechanisms and policies for state-owned enterprises as well as Vietnam Airlines to develop sustainably, while balancing political and economic tasks. State-owned enterprises need to focus on key areas and important locations, while operating under market mechanisms and modern governance according to international standards.

Notably, some experts proposed assigning tasks to appropriate state-owned enterprises to implement large-scale investment projects, thus creating momentum for the country's socio-economic development. For example, assigning Vietnam Airlines to engage in the Long Thanh International Airport project.
