Forest and Climate Change exhibition opens in Hà Nội

HÀ NỘI  Some 30 panels and posters are on display at an exhibition at Việt Nam National University's University of Science (HUS), illustrating how trees are critical to fighting climate change.

The exhibition entitled Forest and Climate Change is a bilingual, in-person and virtual show covering subjects including the climate crisis, carbon capture in forests and the bioeconomy.

The exhibition focuses on the role of forests highlighting the value of the research and contributions made by Spanish and Vietnamese scientists in tackling the climate crisis.

As the UN Secretary General has recently said, climate change is the most important global systemic threat in relation to the global economy, according to Spanish Ambassador to Việt Nam, Carmen Cano De Lasala.

"The European Union also puts fight against climate change and the protection of biodiversity at the centre of its strategic relationship with Việt Nam," she said at the exhibition opening ceremony on October 21.

"As global tourist destinations, both Spain and Việt Nam are aware of the importance of protection of our bio diversities.

"The exhibition is the result of constant support among all partners during the past months of preparation and I believe that it will be a solid basis to strengthen our diplomatic and scientific cooperation in the future between Spain and Việt Nam, which has not yet reached its full potential."

The exhibition visitors will have chance to understand the essential role that forests can play in the fight against climate change.

They are carbon drains, as well as a shelter for biodiversity and they play a key role in keeping the balance of the planet. But forests are seriously threatened in many fronts.

"On this journey of discovery, together we can learn from the insights of scientists," said Professor Vũ Hoàng Linh, Rector of HUS. "We are moving together toward a future where forests are protected, climate change is resolved and the planet thrives."

The university has also put on display items taken from the forest to serve the livelihoods of Vietnamese indigenous people at the exhibition.

This exhibition is a project of scientific diplomacy organised by the Embassy of Spain, in collaboration with the University of Valladolid and HUS, along with the support of others.
