Vietnam spends over US$2.5 billion on importing cars over nine-month period

Vietnam has imported a total of 124,090 completely-built-up (CBU) cars worth US$2.566 billion over the past nine months, up 32.6% in volume and 16% in value year on year, the General Statistics Office (GSO) unveiled.

Figures indicate that Indonesia represents the biggest supplier of cars to the Vietnamese market so far with 43,810 units valued at US$642.24 million.

Thailand ranked second in terms of volume, but took the lead for value. The neighbouring country exported 39,101 units worth US$756.64 million to Vietnam throughout this period.

China exported 19,649 units worth US$582 million to Vietnam, ranking third for both quantity and value.

Statistics also show that total auto sales, including domestically manufactured and assembled cars and imported cars, as of September, had reached 241,400 units, marking an annual increase of 11.9%.

September alone saw 18,282 cars imported, worth US$378 million, up 21.4% in volume and up 26.4% in value.

Domestically manufactured and assembled cars in September alone totaled 34,300 units, rising by 5.5% compared to August and up 30.3% from the same period last year.
