The Mekong Delta region is currently in flood season, prompting many local households to rush to catch the notched mud carp or lesser silver mud carp, known locally as the Linh fish, a regional speciality.

Many people in An Giang Province’s Phu Hoi Commune stay up all night to catch Linh fish in local fields near the Cambodian fields.

Over the past twenty days, Truong Thi Bich and her husband have placed 20 fishing nets on fields to hunt Linh fish. Every day, they get up at 2 am to check the nests.

When the water rose high in previous years, it was easy for residents to catch Linh fish, but this year, the number of fish has decreased significantly. Bich added that it’s likely that the unusually high water levels are preventing the fish from moving in.

According to Bich, a few years ago, her family could earn VND1 million (USD40.81) each night from catching Linh fish, but now they only make VND200,000 to 300,000.

From 4 to 7 am, many boats gather at a market in the fields of An Phu Commune to trade seasonal products from the flood season, such as fish, shrimp, crabs, rats, and snakes.

People in Vinh Te Commune in An Gia are busily preparing fishing gear to catch Linh fish for traders to sell. Ta Van Truong from the commune mentioned that his family earned around VND400,000-500,000 daily from selling Linh fish.

Each kilo of Linh fish is sold at VND50,000-60,000. Traders will bring the fish to various areas in An Giang and neighbouring.
