2025 AFC U20 Asian Cup qualifier: Vietnam suffer 1-0 loss to Syria

Vietnam faced off against Syria in a match to determine the top spot in Group A of the 2025 U20 Asia Cup qualification. Holding the advantage of leading the group on goal difference, Syria opted for a cautious approach under pressure from the Vietnamese team. Meanwhile, Vietnamese captain Cong Phuong and his teammates were aware that attacking was their only way to secure a victory.
Vietnamese players started the match cautiously and effectively prevented Syria’s wing attacks, which are their strong suit. Meanwhile, Syrian players also didn’t flex their muscle, playing quite slowly and cautiously.
Throughout the first half, there were no dangerous chances created by either team, and the first 45 minutes ended without any goals.
After the break, coach Hua Hien Vinh made several adjustments in tactics and formation in an attempt to break the deadlock. However, Vietnamese players struggled with poor passing, and their attacks were easily thwarted.
In fact, midway through the second half, Syria actively sought a draw, passing the ball around their own half.
An unexpected turn came in the 76th minute. From a corner kick by Syria, the ball accidentally hit Ngoc Chien’s head and flew into the net for an own goal.
In the remaining minutes, Vietnam made a strong effort to earn an equalizer, but they failed.
By maintaining their winning streak after four matches, Syria secured their spot and progressed to the 2025 U20 Asia Cup finals.
Vietnam finished second in Group A with 9 points. They will compete with other second-placed teams for a chance to secure a playoff spot. The five second-placed teams with the best records will advance to the next round.
They will wait for the results of matches of other groups due to take place later the same to, in order to determine their own fate.
