Vietnam imports nearly 3.5 million tonnes of fertiliser in eight months

The country splashed out more than US$1.1 billion on importing nearly 3.5 million tonnes of fertiliser during the past eight months of this year, a year-on-year increase of 43.6% in volume and 36.9% in value, according to the General Department of Vietnam Customs.

During the reviewed period, the average price of imported fertiliser stood at an estimated US$324.8 per tonne, marking a 4.6% fall from last year.

In August alone, the country imported nearly 449, 000 tonnes of fertiliser worth over US$157.5 million, representing respective drops of 4.6% and 0.8% in volume and value.

The average import price was US$350.9 per tonne, up 8.6% compared to July and 4% from the same period last year.

China remained the country's biggest fertiliser provider over the eight- month period, accounting for 38.7% of the total import turnover with more than 1.4 million tonnes worth US$439 million, up 17% on-year in terms of both volume and value.

The Russian market was the second largest supplier, contributing US$188 million with a volume of 434,500 tonnes, a year-on-year rise of 133.3% in volume and 112.4% in value. In addition, the country also imported significant quantities of fertiliser from Laos, Israel, the Republic of Korea, Canada, Indonesia, Belgium, and Japan.
