Local weightlifters take three golds at world junior championships

The nation secured three gold and one bronze medals during the first competition day of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Junior Championships 2024 which was held on September 19 in Spain.

In the men’s 54.98kg category, Do Tu Tung claimed the first gold medal in the clean and jerk event after recording a lift of 140kg.

His teammate K’Duong then bagged two gold and one bronze medals in the men’s 54.88kg category. K’Duong also topped the men's 54.88kg in the snatch event with a lift of 115kg.

In the clean & jerk category, he finished third following a 138kg attempt to win a bronze medal. The combined lift of 253kg therefore helped K’Duong to receive a gold medal overall.

He was followed by Tomari Kotaro of Japan and Loganathan of India after lifting a total of 247kg and 231kg, respectively.

The IWF World Junior Championships 2024 initially began on September 19 and is scheduled to last through to September 27. As many as 350 athletes from 64 countries and territories worldwide have gathered together in Spain for different competitions.

Vietnam has sent a total of six weightlifters to the event, with the local athletes set to vie for sets of medals in the men’s 61kg and 67kg categories over the coming days.
