Vietnamese chili exports to the United States reached 163 tonnes during the opening eight months of the year, representing a sharp increase of 143.3% against the same period last year, according to the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA).

Apart from the US, the country’s major export markets were China with 7,377 tonnes and Laos with 970 tonnes.

Most notably, China has emerged as the largest consumer of Vietnamese product in recent years. Insiders attribute the rising demand to Vietnamese chili’s highly spicy flavour, a wide range of chili product types on offer, and seasonal differences between the two countries.

Fresh Vietnamese chili has made inroads into Chinese market since March 2022, with all chili shipments being quarantined for phytosanitary standards set by the market.

Overall, Vietnam raked in more than US$21.2 million from exporting 8,800 tonnes of chili in the eight-month period, up 6.1% in volume and 34.8% in value on-year.

Last year witnessed the country export 10,000 tonnes of chili worth US$20 million, representing a sharp increase of 107% compared to 2022, thereby making it one of the largest chili producers in the world.
