There is a street in Hue city, central Vietnam, which is offering a variety of colourful paper-made lion heads for sales for this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival that is about 10 days to go.
Tran Hung Dao street, dubbed the largest toy market in Hue, is coloured by long rows of lion heads hanging along it for sales. Together with sets of drums and funny animal masks, lion heads are used for the Mid-Autumn Festival. As the festival is drawing near, the lion head market becomes bustling with people coming to buy festive items. Depending on the size and sophistication, lion heads cost from several hundred thousand to tens of millions of Vietnam Dong (VND). People can also purchase mini lion heads to decorate their homes during the Mid-Autumn Festival. Star lanterns are indispensable items for the Mid-Autumn Festival. Red and yellow are the two main colours of lion heads, symbolizing luck, fortune and prosperity, along with other colours such as green, blue, orange, pink and purple. Accessories for a lion dance including pairs of gongs, drums, and lion dance costumes are also sold there. The colourful toy market and its bustling atmosphere attract young people to come and take pictures. Many children are eager to try on a lion head at kiosks. “Not only people in Hue but also many people from neighbouring provinces of Quang Binh and Quang Tri also come here to buy the items. The majority are still young people,” says an owner of a shop. VOV
