The main types of imported meat include poultry and offal, fresh chilled or frozen pork, and fresh chilled or frozen beef.
The reviewed period saw the country import from 37 markets, with the United States, India, Russia, Brazil, and Poland becoming its five largest suppliers.
Vietnam is now one of the world's top 10 countries for pork consumption, according to the latest statistics.
In 2021, the pork consumption per capita in the country amounted to about 30 kilos per person, and the figure rose to 32 kilos in 2022 and 33.8 kilos in 2023, said Pham Kim Dang, deputy director of the Department of Livestock Production under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The increases recorded in imports of all kinds of meat and the pork consumption in Vietnam have created enormous pressure on the domestic livestock industry. Top priorities should therefore be given to strengthening quarantine measures and quality inspection, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien suggested.
