ĐỒNG NAI — The State-run Airports Corporation of Việt Nam (ACV) has proposed using its own funds to build a second runway at Long Thành International Airport in the southern province of Đồng Nai, with a total investment of over VNĐ3.45 trillion (US$138.6 million).
ACV has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Transport, requesting an appraisal of the pre-feasibility study report for the construction of the second runway and the levelling of the ground for Passenger Terminal T3 at Long Thành International Airport.
The second runway, which will be parallel to the first runway, will have a length of 4,000m. It will include a parallel taxiway system and connecting taxiways, signal lights, signs, air traffic management equipment and other related infrastructure to ensure operational efficiency.
This project, with an estimated investment of approximately VNĐ3.45 trillion ($138.6 million), will be funded by ACV using the corporation's own resources.
The levelling of the ground for Passenger Terminal T3 will cover an area of about 181 hectares, with an estimated investment of approximately over VNĐ1.95 trillion ($78.3 million), using public investment funds managed by the Ministry of Transport.
According to ACV, it is essential for airports to have additional runways to prevent entire airport operations from being disrupted in case of an aircraft incident or malfunctions on the first runway or when there are natural disaster emergencies.
Therefore, ACV emphasised that the construction of the second runway at Long Thành International Airport is crucial and urgent to meet operational demands, ensure safety and maximise the effectiveness of the infrastructure developed in phase one.
Previously, to ensure continuous operations at Long Thành International Airport in the event of an incident on one runway, the State Audit of Việt Nam recommended constructing the second runway once the first phase is operational.
The first phase of the Long Thành International Airport project requires a total investment of nearly VNĐ110 trillion. ACV is in charge of key components within the airport, with an estimated cost of VNĐ9 trillion.
The first runway is expected to be completed by April 30 next year, while the construction of taxiways and parking facilities is anticipated to be finished by June 2025. — VNS
