Vietnam’s leading electric vehicle maker Vinfast on July 15 broke ground on its new electric vehicle assembly plant in Subang of West Java in Indonesia.

With an initial investment of around US$200 million, the facility boasts an annual production capacity of 50,000 vehicles and also houses several key production areas such as a body shop, a general assembly shop, a paint shop, and a testing area.

Scheduled to commence operation in the fourth quarter of 2025, the plant will produce right-hand drive versions of VinFast’s e-sport utility vehicle (SUV) models, including the VF 3, VF 5, VF 6, and VF 7 specifically for the Indonesian market.

The project aims to generate thousands of local jobs, increase the skilled labour rate, and significantly contribute to socio-economic development of the local community in general.

It is also poised to make a substantial impact on promoting green transportation in Indonesia.

General H. Moeldoko, chief of Presidential Staff of Republic Indonesia, shared that VinFast's presence will not only have a positive impact on the local economy, but will also provide fresh job opportunities and improve the welfare of the surrounding community.

He noted that the Indonesian Government heavily encourages foreign investment into its market, especially in the automotive industry.

Moeldoko expressed a belief that VinFast’s presence would help in the technological innovation and knowledge transfer process that is much needed to increase the overall competitiveness of the national automotive industry.

In his opening remarks, Temmy Wiradjaja, CEO of VinFast Indonesia, stressed that the groundbreaking ceremony comes just months after VinFast's official market debut in Indonesia that highlights the company’s strategic expansion and competitive drive in the region. Indeed, it marks a key milestone in the strategy to become a leading player in one of the region’s most promising electric vehicle markets.

VinFast believes the project will demonstrate its long-term commitment to operating in the Indonesian market, boosting the electric vehicle sector locally, supporting economic growth, and enhancing the quality of life for Indonesians, concluded the CEO.
