Underdogs Vietnam outplayed World No.13 Belgium in a play-off game on July 7, winning a bronze medal at the 2024 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Challenger Cup in Manila, the Philippines.

After a 0-3 loss to the Czech Republic in a semifinal game on July 6, Vietnamese women entered the play-off with a comfortable mindset.

Middle hitter Bich Tuyen, with her high-speed cut shots sometimes up to 107 km/h, helped Vietnam take control of the game, ending up 25-23 in the first set.

In the second set, two major Vietnamese hitters Bich Tuyen and Thanh Thuy could not maintain their strength and often made mistakes, enabling Belgian players to come back and earn an equalizer.

The third set saw Vietnamese women play more confidently and disciplined. Middle hitter Bich Tuyen changed her tactics, and her efforts paid off, helping Vietnam score points constantly. Vietnam won 25-20 in the third set.

In the last decisive set, Vietnamese women continued to flex their muscle, outperforming their Belgian opponents 25-17.

This is the first time in history that Vietnamese women have won a bronze medal at the FIVB Challenger Cup.
