Local chess players win four gold medals at ASEAN University Games

The national chess team has won four gold medals at the ASEAN University Games (AUG) 2024, which is currently underway in Indonesia.

Nguyen Hong Anh bagged two gold medals in the women’s blitz and rapid events after scoring seven points.

Also in the blitz competition, Anh and her teammates Bach Ngoc Thuy Duong, Pham Tran Gia Thu, and Nguyen Ngoc Yen Vy took home a gold medal in the women’s team category with a total of 19 points, 0.5 points higher than hosts Indonesia.

They continued their good form by claiming another gold medal in the women’s rapid competition. On July 1 the chess team won a silver medal for Vietnam in the women’s standard team competition.

The previous day, local swimmer Truong Viet Vu secured a silver medal in the men’s 1,500m freestyle competition after clocking a time of 16’51”61.

So far, the Vietnamese delegation has won four gold, two silver, and two bronze medals. Vietnam sent a delegation of 37 athletes to the tournament this year and has set a target of winning gold medals in track and field, chess, swimming, and taekwondo.

The 2024 ASEAN University Games kicked off on June 25, with the event drawing the participation of all 11 members of the Southeast Asian Games Federation. Hundreds of athletes are vying for 250 sets of medals across 21 sports.

This year marks the 21st edition of the biennale event and will last through to July 7. In the 2022 version of the competition, Vietnam ranked fourth with 13 golds, whilst Thailand topped the medal table with 109 golds.
