The Vietnam national U16 football team left Hanoi for Indonesia on June 20 as they prepare for their first clash against Brunei at the ASEAN U16 Boys’ Championship two days later.
A total of 23 local footballers fly to Indonesia on June 20 ahead of the start of the ASEAN U16 Boys’ Championship. Vietnam have been drawn in Group B alongside the likes of Myanmar, Brunei, and Cambodia. Following their opener against Brunei on June 22, Vietnam will face off against Cambodia and Myanmar on June 25 and June 28, respectively. The tournament draws the participation of a total of 12 teams. The top team from each group and the best second-place squad will then advance to the last four, with the final due to take place on July 4. The team led by head coach Tran Minh Chien are expected to achieve a strong finish in the regional tournament. In 2022, Vietnam finished as runner-up after losing to Indonesia 1-0 in the final. They are therefore aiming to have a better result this year. The ASEAN U16 Boys’ Championship is an annual international football competition contested by the national teams of the members of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF), with the occasional invitation sent to other nations from the rest of Asia. The competition was first held back in 2002 before once again resuming in 2005. Vietnam previously won the championship title in 2006, 2010, and 2017.
