Around 3,000 athletes from 52 countries and territories are taking part in the largest triathlon competition VinFast IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam in Da Nang City.

The eighth edition that is due to last for three days has seen 1,532 Vietnamese people register to participate in, a record high number so far.

The main race on May 12 will see athletes from around the world competing in a 1.9km ocean swim, a two-loop 90km bike race, and a 21km run along the coastline of Da Nang.

Other competitions including SUNRISE SPRINT, IRONKIDS Vietnam, and Newborns Vietnam Run Out will also be held to encourage the spirit of sports lovers and help to nurture the development of future generations.

The competition will contribute to promoting a healthy lifestyle for all people, encourage people to partake in the sporting movements, and promote images of a friendly city to international friends, said Nguyen Trong Thao, deputy director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Da Nang city, at the opening ceremony on May 10.

Once participating in a sporting event in Da Nang, athletes will be warmly welcomed and given the best possible conditions to compete and enjoy interesting experiences in the central city, he added.

The competition debuted in 2015, drawing over 1,000 athletes from 45 countries and territories including only 69 Vietnamese athletes.

The IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam offers 34 slots to the 2024 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships this December in Taupo of New Zealand, according to the organisers.

Furthermore, the top five female athletes in each age group category will win tickets to the 2024 IRONMAN World Championships in Nice, France, this September.
