"Tình mẫu tử" (Maternity ward), a painting on silk produced by late artist Le Pho, was sold for EUR400,000 at an auction sale “Vente duplex so unique” held on June 18 at Millon house in France.

The painting, a 58 x 45.5 cm work completed in the 1940s, was anticipated to fetch anywhere between EUR200,000 and EUR300,000.

This painting has remained in the same Paris family since its initial acquisition. According to the family’s memory, it was purchased around 1944 from the Hessel gallery, succeeded by Mr. Henri Joly, located at 26 rue La Boétie, auction website Millon wrote.

Le Pho, who lived from 1907 to 2001, was a prominent Vietnamese painter who developed a successful and prolific career in France, producing thousands of artworks throughout his life. Indeed, his pieces are enthusiastically hunted by art collectors from all over the world.

He also became the first Vietnamese artist to have paintings sold at high prices in an international auction. Some of his typical artworks include “The Family Life”, “The beauty in a ‘sunshine’ shirt”, and “Nude” which fetched US$1 million, US$1.052 million, and US$1.4 million, respectively.
