Old Hue heritage street at risk of disappearing
Bao Vinh Street in Huong Vinh Ward is a few kilometres east of the Imperial City of Hue. During the 18th century, it was a bustling neighbourhood in the Nguyen Dynasty.
In 1991, the street had 39 old houses, but this number has fallen to around 10, roughly 100 years old.
Many old houses have been replaced with new ones.
Grocery stores, hair salons and eateries operate on Bao Vinh Street.
Although Thua-Thien Hue Province has issued a preservation plan for Bao Vinh Street, implementation has proved ineffective. According to experts, more drastic measures should be taken.
According to the Secretary of the Hue City Party Committee, Phan Thien Dinh, Bao Vinh Street has significant potential for tourism development. However, effective preservation of the area for tourism requires decisive participation from different concerned agencies and local people.
