HÀ NỘI — The National Assembly Standing Committee unanimously approved on Saturday the proposal to establish Huế City under central administration on the basis of the existing province of Thừa Thiên Huế.
Under the proposal, the new centrally run Huế City would cover approximately 4,950sq.km with a population of nearly 1.24 million.
Two new urban districts - Phú Xuân and Thuận Hóa - would be established, while the existing Phong Điền District would be converted into a town. Additionally, Nam Đông District would be merged with Phú Lộc District to create a new Phú Lộc.
Eleven wards, a township, and a commune would also be established by reorganising 21 existing commune-level units.
After the reorganisation, Huế City would encompass two urban districts, three towns and four rural districts, with an urbanisation rate of over 62 per cent.
Minister of Home Affairs Phạm Thị Thanh Trà emphasised that establishing Huế as a centrally run city carries significant political importance and reflects the collective aspirations of the local population.
The move is expected to provide momentum for economic growth, turning Huế into a regional powerhouse.
NA Vice Chairman Nguyễn Khắc Định announced that the NA Standing Committee had unanimously approved the proposal.
He urged relevant agencies to quickly finalise administrative formalities to have the proposal discussed at the NA's upcoming 8th session. — VNS
