HÀ NỘI — Ten people have been arrested and more than 200kg of drugs seized after police busted a trafficking gang smuggling narcotics from Cambodia and Laos to Việt Nam.
The Drug Crime Investigation Police Department (C04) under the Ministry of Public Security said the ring leader was Lý Thành Hữu, 40, from Hóc Môn, HCM City.
Documents and other items relating to the smuggling operation were also seized.
Police say Lý Thành Hữu has changed his smuggling routes many times to evade the authorities.
At the end of August 2024, the police received information that the smugglers would transport drugs across the border on a passenger bus on the Diễn Châu (Nghệ An) - Sơn Tây (Hà Nội) route and would deliver five sacks of drugs to the Mỹ Đình National Stadium area.
On the afternoon of August 30, when the passenger bus arrived at the Mỹ Đình Stadium, the bus attendant took out five sacks and two plastic bags from the trunk of the passenger bus and left them on the side of the road waiting for someone to come out to receive.
A few minutes later, two men came on a motorbike and picked up the drugs.
The police arrested bus attendant Hồ Quang Nhân, 25, Quản Trọng Cao and Lý Văn Huy, 22, from Nghệ An Province.
About 110 kg of synthetic drugs, 170 electronic cigarettes and many related documents were seized.
Cao confessed that in addition to the drugs discovered, he also sent three cardboard boxes containing drugs to his neighbour's residence in Minh Khai, Bắc Từ Liêm District, Hà Nội.
Based on the men’s confessions, police extended the investigation and dismantled the mass ring including one of the leaders with Lao nationality. — VNS
