YÊN BÁI — A total of 40 water purifiers and 200 multi-purpose plastic tarpaulins, with a total value of more than VNĐ3 billion (US$124,096), have been delivered to Yên Bái northern mountainous province.

Vũ Xuân Thành, deputy director of the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), on Sunday received aid from the Embassy of Japan and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) at the Nội Bài International Airport in Hà Nội.

The goods were transferred to Yên Bái Province on the same day to be delivered to people affected by Typhoon Yagi.

At the handover ceremony, Japanese Ambassador to Việt Nam Ito Naoki expressed his sympathy and encouragement to the families affected by the typhoon.

He recognised the need to support Việt Nam with medium and long-term solutions to minimise damage caused by landslides and flash floods.

“With our experience in disaster prevention, Japan pledges to continue cooperating with Việt Nam towards early recovery and reconstruction of disaster-hit areas,” he said.

Previously, Iain Frew, British Ambassador to Việt Nam, confirmed that the British Government will provide one million pounds in humanitarian aid to help Việt Nam overcome the consequences of natural disasters.

To date, MARD has received support from ten embassies and 16 international organisations with a commitment to supply 160 tonnes of goods by air.

The goods arriving at the Nội Bài Airport were immediately transported to Yên Bái, Lào Cai and Cao Bằng provinces.

From last Wednesday to Saturday, the MARD received one aid shipment from the Australian Government and three shipments from the ASEAN Regional Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management and then transferred to Yên Bái and Lào Cai provinces.

The Department of International Cooperation under the MARD informed that emergency aid goods from India arrived at the international airport on Sunday afternoon.

The aid from India was worth about $1 million and included 1,200 water purifiers, 1,000 water tanks with valves, ten water tanks with a capacity of 500 litres, 5,000 blankets and 5,000 mosquito nets and 1,200 solar-powered lamps. — VNS
