HÀ NỘI — Hà Nội's authorities have announced the cancellation of all fireworks displays across the city during the upcoming 70th anniversary of the Capital’s Liberation.

This move comes in response to the devastating aftermath of Typhoon Yagi, which caused widespread damage and loss of life in northern Việt Nam.

In a statement on Tuesday, Hà Nội's Party Secretary Bùi Thị Minh Hoài emphasised that the move reflects the city’s commitment to its people, showcasing the spirit of 'Hà Nội for the nation, with the nation."

While cultural and artistic events will proceed as planned, the city administration will reassess the scope of each event, prioritising practical and meaningful activities that involve the community.

Vice Chairwoman of the Central Commission for Information and Education Đinh Thị Mai commended the decision, describing it as a timely and necessary show of support for those affected by the typhoon.

A day earlier, the Hà Nội Capital Military Command proposed limiting fireworks to a single display at Hoàn Kiếm Lake instead of multiple locations across the city.

Earlier, on September 21, the Ministry of National Defence decided to cancel the military parades for the upcoming 80th anniversary of the Việt Nam People's Army and the 35th All-People’s National Defence Festival (December 22, 1944-2024), enabling units to prioritise post-typhoon recovery and assist those affected by the disaster. — VNS
