Efforts have been made to finish the 220kV Nam Sum – Nong Cong transmission line project in October to facilitate electricity imports from Laos to Vietnam to meet the rising demand in northern provinces.

This is an urgent project aimed at importing electricity from Laos’ Nam Sum Hydropower Plant Complex to Vietnam, and realising the commitment between the two countries’ Parties and Governments to strengthen energy cooperation.

With a total length of nearly 130km, the line spans the districts of Que Phong and Quy Chau in the central province of Nghe An, as well as Nhu Xuan, Nhu Thanh, and Nong Cong in its neighbouring province of Thanh Hoa.

Tran Kim Vu, deputy head of the Northern Vietnam Power Projects Management Board (NPMB) which manages this project, said that it is intensifying coordination with localities to address existing shortcomings and obstacles to accelerate work on the project.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) announced at the beginning of this year that Vietnam Electricity (EVN) had received proposals from seven wind farm investors in Laos that want to sell electricity to Vietnam, with a total capacity of nearly 4,150 MW.

Lao investors will sell over 682 MW of wind power before 2025 while the remaining amount will be delivered after this period, the MoIT said.
