Death-missing toll climbs to 324 as Typhoon Yagi’s aftermath persists

HÀ NỘI — As of 5.30pm on Wednesday, at least 324 have been confirmed dead or reported missing due to the landslide and flash floods triggered by Typhoon Yagi last weekend, according to the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention and Control.

Lào Cai Province was one of the most affected with 72 deaths and 111 still missing.

The severe landslide that wiped away the entire Làng Nủ Village in the province's Bảo Yên District resulted in 30 deaths, 83 missing and 18 injuries, local authorities reported.

More than 54,000 houses across the northern cities and provinces were also submerged as the water level in the region’s rivers to alarming levels.

Early afternoon the same day, the Ministry of National Defence has deployed military helicopters to deliver disaster relief to people in affected areas in Yên Bái and Cao Bằng provinces.

Rising water levels have also compelled the capital city of Hà Nội to evacuate households in areas near the Red River, including 380 in Hoàn Kiếm District, 836 in Bắc Từ Liêm District, 276 in Ba Đình District and 129 in the suburban Quốc Oai District.

A total of 126 schools in the city were also forced to close on Wednesday due to the ongoing heavy downpours.

In solidarity with the nation, multiple state departments and agencies have launched support campaigns among public employees to deliver relief to people affected by the devastating consequences of Typhoon Yagi, including the Vietnam News Agency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Party’s Central Commission for Communication and Education, the Party Committees of central departments and state enterprises, among others. — VNS
