BẾN TRE — Bến Tre People’s Committee has come up with solutions to tackle the flooding problem at the Giao Long Industrial Park, the largest in the province, as southern Việt Nam is seeing frequent heavy rains.

The 166ha industrial park in Châu Thành District is frequently flooded during heavy rains, making it difficult for workers to enter.

Chairman of Bến Tre Province People's Committee Trần Ngọc Tam said the People’s Committee would instruct the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the district and the Management Board of Industrial Zones to dredge canals to drain water away from the park.

They will also set up more pumps to clear water quickly when it rains.

After the National Highway 57B section between the An Khánh roundabout and the park was upgraded, the road is at a higher elevation, leading to rainwater flowing into the park, he said.

Bến Tre now plans to raise the roads inside the park to the same level as National Highway 57B, which would enable water to drain quickly.

Besides, the ongoing construction of road DK07 between Giao Long Port and the under-construction Phú Thuận Industrial Park will also include a large water drainage system for the park, which is expected to be finished in 2025.

This new system, combined with an upgrade to the park’s internal water drainage system and road elevation, would solve the flooding problem, Tam said.

On the morning of May 21 the industrial park was heavily flooded after prolonged rains on the night before, with water standing up to a metre deep, causing massive traffic congestion at the entrance, and damaging many motorbikes.

The heavy rain flooded the roads inside the park and forced power to be cut off during the night, leaving the water pumping system non-operational. — VNS
