BÀ RỊA -VŨNG TÀU – Another fatal case of rabies in the Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu province, reportes Dr. Dương Thanh, director of Bà Rịa Hospital.
The patient, born in 1991, resided in Phước Bình Hamlet, Phước Tỉnh Commune, Long Điền District, worked in slaughtering dogs and cats and ran a dog and cat meat restaurant in Phước Hưng Commune.
According to the patient’s family, on December 17, the patient experienced fatigue and shortness of breath so he was taken to Chợ Rẫy Hospital in HCM City, where doctors diagnosed him with rabies.
The patient was later transferred to the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, where doctors conducted an RT-PCR test for the rabies virus, confirming the diagnosis.
He was discharged and sent home one day later.
On the morning of Thurday (December 19) the patient began experiencing severe rabies symptoms and was admitted to Bà Rịa Hospital’s Infectious Diseases Department in a semi-conscious, agitated, and hyperactive state, with frothing at the mouth, spitting, and full-body muscle spasms and he was given sedatives.
Few hours later, the patient suffered seizures, frothing at the mouth, and severe cyanosis despite sedative treatments. His family requested to take him home, but he died shortly thereafter at Bà Rịa Hospital.
In response to this fatal case, the provincial health department of Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu has advised all individuals who had direct contact with the patient to monitor their health and strictly adhere to rabies vaccination schedules.
Authorities have also conducted disinfection of the patient’s residence and areas where dogs and cats were kept, using Cloramin B. The family has been instructed to follow proper hygiene protocols during burial or cremation.
Additionally, local authorities have increased public awareness of rabies prevention, encouraging residents to vaccinate their pets against rabies. VNS
