AIMAG 6 cancelation impacts Vietnam’s sports schedule

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) confirmed on August 19 that the sixth Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG 6), originally due to be held in Bangkok and Chonburi of Thailand from November 21 to 30, has been cancelled, impacting regional participating countries, including Vietnam.

The OCA cited the non-availability of funds to stage the Games coupled with the shortage of time before the start of the tournament as the reasons behind the cancellation of the event.

Initially, the Games was scheduled to be held in 2021, although it was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was then rescheduled three times in March 2022, November 2023, and March 2024, but ultimately never happened.

The AIAMG 6 is the second important Games for Vietnam in 2024 following the Paris Olympics in July.

Vietnam had planned to send more than 300 athletes to compete in 27 sports in Thailand this November. The cancellation of AIMAG 6 has therefore forced the Vietnamese sporting delegation to change their plans at the end of the year.

Sports such as men’s and women’s futsal, 3×3 basketball, and others had earmarked AIMAG 6 as a key competition.

Most recently, Vietnam finished ninth overall at AIMAG in 2017 after clinching 13 gold, eight silver, and 19 bronze medals.
