Agro-forestry-aquatic exports likely to bring in US$55 billion this year

With strong export growth recorded in key agricultural products during the first eight months of the year, the Vietnamese agro-forestry-aquatic sector is likely to rake in US$55 billion this year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

MARD statistics show the past eight months saw timber and wood products bring back US$10.24 billion from export, up 20.6% year on year. Other key export items included coffee (US$4.03 billion, up 36.1%); rice (US$3.85 billion, 21.7%); cashew nuts (US$2.77 billion, 21.7%); fruit and vegetables (US$4.63 billion, 30.6%); and shrimp (US$2.41 billion, 9.5%).

The average export price of major export items witnessed an upward trajectory, including rice at US$625 per tonne, up 14.8%; coffee at US$3,805 per tonne, up 54.5%; rubber at US$1,567 per tonne, up 16.6%; pepper at US$4,810 per tonne, up 47%; and tea at US$1,756 per tonne, up 2.2%.

MARD Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien emphasised that in the remaining months of the year, the MARD will continue to handle market issues in a bid to facilitate the export of these products to markets such as China, the United States, the EU, and the Eurasian Economic Union.

He advised businesses to make full use of incentives from various free trade agreements (FTAs), especially the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership and the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement in a bid to boost exports and support businesses in signing new export orders.

Insiders also stressed the need to improve product quality, speed up the negotiation process, expand markets, and develop brands for products in the international market.

At present, Vietnamese agro-forestry -fisheries products have been exported to more than 190 countries and territories worldwide.
